Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day, everyone! I’ll admit, the hubby and and I are not huge fans of this particular holiday, but it turns out that we’ve got a lot of love to celebrate this year. We’ve been married now for just over a year, and we’re super, super excited to be expecting a new baby together later summer!
Being pregnant (for the first time!) has thrown me for a little bit of a loop when it comes to how I eat… I’ll admit I’ve been indulging in some old favorites, and although they were a nice treat for a while, they reminded me how my old way of eating kinda made me feel like ick most of the time. 😉 So, I’m kicking off my 2nd trimester back on the wagon, and it really does feel great. My goal is to CrossFit throughout the pregnancy, and I need the right kind of fuel for both me and the baby to be at our best, in workouts and out.
Any fellow Paleo mamas out there? Would love to hear how you’ve done it and what resources you’ve found!
PS – Still trying to sort out a fun little treat for Valentine’s Day (that doesn’t involve boxes of sugary sweets)? Check back tomorrow for some super simple dark-chocolate-covered strawberries!
Congratulations! I did CrossFit through both of my pregnancies, and it’s the best thing that you can do for you and your baby. You’ll have lots of energy, even if you indulge here and there and go off the beaten track with your eats. Just listen to your body, and do what you feel comfortable.
Enjoy your pregnancy and love your website!
Thanks so much, XFit Mama! I’m so flattered you like the site – I’ve followed you via Nom Nom Paleo/FitBomb for a while. 🙂 Had a great workout last night – It’s so good to have my energy back for a bit! Thanks again!
Major congrats!!!! So awesome for you guys and sounds like you’re doing what’s best for you and baby 🙂
I’m newly pregnant (into the 10th week) and have been doing Paleo for 1.5 years. I’m not a Xfit person, but I workout a lot and have noticed it’s definitely helping my energy levels stay up. What I noticed is that Paleo has helped my liver significantly and I’ve had no morning sickness. Not a lot of toxins up in this! My tricks:
-Don’t meal plan. We are huge planners for the week and my sensitive taste buds and tummy have thrown us for a loop! We have started keeping a variety of organic, frozen meat in the freezer so I can pick what I am really feeling like that night. Or I’ll stop at the grocery store on the way home and pick up what I want. Vegetables have not been a problem, but the meals are what get me.
-Have healthy alternatives on hand and good substitutions. It’s hard when you don’t want to eat anything Paleo and toast is the only thing that sounds good! I’ve avoided it so far, but not easily. We grab Peligrino at Costco so I have mineral water on hand at all times (I also make fancy water when someone’s having a cocktail and it makes me feel better- I add a tiny bit of fresh ginger, lemon, and lime to the mineral water). I get the lowest sugar ginger ale I can find (Reeds has a mainly Stevia sweetened, but it’s still super sweet for me). I also have fresh fruit because that’s one of the only things that sounds good! We also use the weekends to make treats or paleo muffins so I can have those on hand throughout the week (the only problem here is I pre-made a few, and they’ve been sitting in the freezer bc they don’t sound good anymore!).
-Nap when you’re tired. No matter what. Your body is working overtime…
-Soup. NomNom Paleo has some awesome soup recipes and vegetable soups have been saving me. I made her broccoli, curry cream soup and froze half of it. Delicious.
That’s the bulk of where I am so far! I’m glad to hear of someone else who is Paleo and Pregnant because sometimes I feel alone (and the Udi’s GFDF Cinnamon Rolls always look tasty when I walk buy them in the grocery store…)!
Congrats, Morgan!! That’s so exciting… Great tips for fellow prego ladies. The napping one was big for me – I’m a horrible napper, but you’ve got to do it!;)
